Rosy Bee-eater

Rosy Bee-eater

Rosy Bee-eater is an endemic African species for which there are only six known breeding colonies. The Rosy Bee-eater breeds in holes in sandy areas. The colony near Sette Cama in Gabon held several thousand birds which we viewed through a telescope. Later, near our accommodation in a local village, I saw a large number of these birds hunting for insects near a school. I sat still in the sandy school yard in the midday sun and waited to see if one of the birds would land near me. After a short time, a Rosy Bee-eater, having caught its prey, landed close to me and allowed me to take this photo.
