Blue-capped Ifrita

Blue-capped Ifrita

It was very dark and starting to rain when we saw this little gem in a tree close to the edge of the road. Its behaviour is similar to members of the Nuthatch family as it works its way along branches looking for food. It hasn’t yet been placed in a family however but is thought to be one of a few Papua New Guinea species which are poisonous to humans if eaten.
