Important Bird Areas have been designated by BirdLife International as places which contain species which are threatened with extinction and / or have a limited range. They do not necessarily have any protected status within the country and as in this case, they are often inhabited by the local people and their animals. Not all species in an IBA are threatened of course and Lilac-breasted Roller is a reasonably common and widespread species.
