Little Ringed Plover

Little Ringed Plover

Tabubil is a mining area managed by the Australian company, OK Tedi. Apparently, the major river which flows through the area used to be at the bottom of a deep ravine but is now 20 metres or so higher since mining started. The reason is that the slurry from mining operations has been dumped into the river and has settled on the bed causing the water levels to rise. We stopped at an area of gravel workings to look at the river and came across a breeding area for Little Ringed Plovers. A few days later, we met some experts from Europe who have been seconded to the area to help to clean up the river system.
