Our driver drove the bus away from the gravel workings without telling us what he was doing. He returned an hour later having had a puncture repaired back in Tabubil. It was a slightly worrying time as some of us had left optical equipment on the bus. However, it gave us time to explore the area and find some birds of prey such as this Oriental Hobby. We drove to Kiunga on a road built for mining operations. We met several road trains coming in the opposite direction. These comprised a large number of heavy trucks with security vehicles at the front and back. The road trains have absolute priority on this road and so we were obliged to pull over and wait until all the convey has passed.
