Southern Cassowary

Southern Cassowary

During an afternoon stroll through the forest, we came across this lone Cassowary. There are three species of Cassowary in Papua New Guinea, the Southern Cassowary also being found in Queensland in Australia. In Australia, they are difficult to see and can be aggressive but this bird was easy to see and passive. It later walked into camp and was happy to be photographed at close range. It is possible therefore that it had been raised by humans perhaps because local people had killed its parents.
