Striated (Green-backed) Heron sub-adult

Striated (Green-backed) Heron sub-adult

This small heron is found across most of sub-Saharan Africa and can often be seen on small ponds and streams. This sub-adult bird was seen hunting for food on a small backwater whilst we were trying to find much less common species such as Hartlaub’s Duck. The day was intensely hot and humid and involved walking more than twenty kilometres through the forest. Later that afternoon, we walked out of the forest in a massive tropical storm and as a result, spent much of the evening in the hotel trying to dry our clothes and boots. I seem to remember that my boots were still damp two days later.
