Vieillot’s Black Weaver adult male

Vieillot’s Black Weaver adult male

Vieillot’s Black Weaver is a member of this large family which nests colonially and in this case in company with Village Weavers. The nests were above a small pond adjacent to a restaurant where we stopped for lunch. This species is fairly common in west and west-central Africa and this male is in the subspecies which can be found from Nigeria and westwards. In other parts of Africa, the male is an equally striking but all black bird with a distinctive yellow eye.
