I said to my wife as soon as we arrived in California that she should look out for magpies. She did in fact see a magpie when we were travelling towards Monterey but had forgotten to mention it till we were miles further down the road. Yellow-billed Magpie was a target species for me as I hadn’t seen one before and it has a very small range in this part of California.
