The Shoebill was standing in shallow water surrounded by water lilies. Shoebill is an iconic African species and declining in numbers in its limited range from Sudan through to Zambia. It frequents large freshwater swamps overgrown with vegetation, grasses, reeds and papyrus and is rarely seen in the open. It is most likely threatened by competition for land for agricultural development and livestock use as well as the diversion of water resources. Source: Birds of Africa, Vol 1, pp. 191-193.
