Iceland is highly efficient in its use of geothermal energy to provide hot water and central heating. Cold water is pumped underground and the resultant hot water is piped to the local towns under the pavements. This helps to keep the pavements clear of snow in winter as well as providing hot water for home heating. I woke very early one morning and went for a walk to the local geothermal plant in temperatures below -5°C
