This beautiful Silky Anteater was found sleeping in a tree above the water. The boatman manouvered the boat in the water channel so that we had an excellent view through the vegetation to be able to see the whole creature. Its head was tucked into its curled up body.
Silky Anteaters are found from Oaxaca and southern Veracruz in Mexico, through Central America and south to Ecuador, northern Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. A smaller, isolated population is also found in the northern Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil as well as Trinidad. They inhabit a range of different forest types, including semi-deciduous, tropical evergreen and mangrove forests from sea level to 1,500m.
