These Black-thighed Falconet Microhierax fringillarius were photographed at distance in poor light in the early morning. In total, we saw three birds of this species on the same bare tree and they were the only birds of this species which we saw in our whole time in Thailand.
Black-thighed Falconet is one of the world’s smallest birds of prey with an overall length in the range 14-17 cm. or approximately the same size as a House Sparrow. It is native to Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and vagrant to Sri Lanka.
The typical habitat of Black-thighed Falconet is forest, forest edge and wooded open area. It can also be found frequently around human cultivation, villages, and near active slash-and-burn forest clearance; often by rivers, streams, and paddy fields. It mostly lives below 1,500m elevation.
