Common Merganser also known as Goosander is a member of a group of ducks known collectively as Sawbills because of the serrated edges along the bill. The serrated edge helps a Sawbill to catch and hold on to slippery fish. The large number of Common Merganser on Lake Geneva indicates the presence of a substantial amount of food. In addition, the evidence of this adult male Common Merganser in eclipse plumage is that this small corner of Lake Geneva represents a safe haven for these birds.
