Common Parasol

The Red Grasshawk, also known as Common Parasol, and Grasshawk dragonfly, Neurothemis fluctuans is a species of dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It is widespread in many Asian countries.

Common Parasol is often confused with the very similar species, Neurothemis fulvia. The easy way to tell them apart is the wing pattern. On the male Neurothemis fluctuans, the edge of the colour on the hind wings is arced. Also, the marks on the abdomen are slightly different. The mature male is more cherry red/brown in colour.

Many thanks to members of the dragonfly group on Bird Forum for identifying it as Neurothemis fluctuans.
