Schwarzsee has always been one of my favourite places to visit. The large hotel there is nearly 2,600 metres above sea level and therefore about 1,000 metres higher than Zermatt itself. The demanding walk from Zermatt was replaced on this occasion by a ride in two cable cars. We had only just arrived at Schwarzsee and were trying to find our feet when a Golden Eagle passed overhead giving little time to view it properly let alone take a photograph. I tracked it through my binoculars till it disappeared towards the Klein Matterhorn. Fortunately, the same or another Golden Eagle returned some twenty minutes later and I was able to take a few distant photos as it soared to a great height on the thermals.
