Moose

Moose

An adult female (cow) Moose with a juvenile in a small party of four animals seen near the main Highway 60 in the Algonquin National Park. The moose (North America) or elk (Eurasia), Alces alces, is the largest extant species in the deer family. Moose typically inhabit boreal forests and temperate broadleaf and mixed forests of the Northern Hemisphere in temperate to subarctic climates. Currently, most moose are found in Canada, Alaska, New England, Scandinavia, Latvia, Estonia and Russia. After expanding for most of the 20th century, the moose population of North America has been in steep decline since the 1990s. Populations expanded greatly with improved habitat and protection, but for unknown reasons, the moose population is declining rapidly.
