Some two thirds of Akagera National Park was degazetted in order to provide land for refugees returning to Rwanda after the genocide. The journey out of Akagera soon took us into a dusty landscape with domesticated animals. The only bird which I remember was Ruaha Chat (a recent split of Arnott’s Chat) and found around the villages but unfortunately not photographed. We stopped at the bridge at Rwinkavu which overlooks a lake on one side of the road and a gully on the other. One highlight was seeing a pair of Ross’s Turacos in the trees alongside the lake.
