Silver-eared Laughingthrush Trochalopteron melanostigma was seen at the top of the mountain in Doi Inthanon National Park where it is a resident species in both the dry and wet seasons. Most Laughingthrushes on this trip were very difficult to see but these birds, although not that easy to find, came to the forest edge to eat bread and scraps which had been put out for them by the kitchen staff from the numerous restaurants in the visitor area. The birds also perched in the open occasionally which provided the opportunity for this photograph in the dark forest at distance.

Silver-eared Laughingthrush is one of the many recent splits of Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush previously Garrulax erythrocephalus and its subspecies G. e. melanostigma. It occcurs in north-west Thailand as well Yunnan, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Its main habitat is broadleaf evergreen, pine and mixed broadleaf-pine forests, secondary growth and scrubby areas.
