Sightings
Straight-billed Woodcreeper Dendroplex picus was seen on three occasions in the Caroni Swamp but with difficult and interrupted views from a moving and crowded boat. The final sighting was a little more open giving views of the whole bird in its very dark habitat.
Species
Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and heavily degraded former forest. There are a remarkable thirteen subspecies of which D. p. altirostris is endemic to Trinidad.
Status and Distribution
Straight-billed Woodcreeper is a species of least concern in its large range in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Venezuela. It is an uncommon resident on Trinidad where it is found in mangroves and absent on Tobago.
