In the 1930s, westerners had travelled to the Tari Valley believing that gold had been found there. They were amazed however to find that the Valley had a very large native population. The local people were equally amazed as they had never before seen westerners. It is not obvious how these areas which are several hundred miles from the coast and would have involved crossing dense forests, could be reached in the 1930s.
